Quick Tip: Children and Divorce

Divorce is hard for children.

No matter what their age, the circumstances, or how well you, as parents, are handling things, divorce is not easy for kids. When parents are divorcing, children feel:
  • sad
  • anxious
  • mad
  • vulnerable
  • guilty
  • frustrated
  • ashamed
  • responsible
  • or perhaps relieved...you name it.
Parents, you should expect to see mood and behavior changes and should be open to sharing your own feelings and communicating with your kids about the situation (at an age appropriate level).

These changes are normal but if they last well past the finalization of the divorce, worsen, or the children show no signs of stress at all, this becomes more concerning. This is a good time to talk with a therapist since the child may be struggling more than expected and could use some support to work through any remaining feelings about the divorce.
